Commiserations to Andre for the Tony Neal photo, I love it but couldn't vote for it as it is 'just record photography' - exactly what I do, both with stock cars and emergency vehicles. I say 'just' because many people dismiss it as easy, yet often use the results for detail, reference or illustration. I think this infant competition is looking for something more extraordinary which in this sport is likely to be action - and I voted for the winning pic.
Andre (Giant) has done what it is often extremely difficult to do, get a good 'front-threequarter' view, without various drivers, mechanics, hangers-on and joe public blocking any of the subject out! He has also not 'clipped' the subject, losing either end or the top/bottom of the car. He's used the framing wisely - a stock car is a horizontal (or landscape) subject, and camera frames are just that in normal mode. If the sun had been present, I'm sure he would have tried to get his shot so that the shadows were behind the car rather than over it, but the sun takes no orders, and you can't normally move the car unless it's yours! It’s a great rule as a ‘recordist’ – do the best you can in circumstances you cannot change. Yes, I think I’ve just made that word up.
Record photography isn't easy - check out the many views available to see online and decide for yourself – but bear in mind, as I do, that some people are not looking for that reference-point shot, they’re more arty and creative. I could never claim that myself!
If Andre had won with this shot I'd have been delighted, both for him and the ethos I work to, but as I said at the start, an action sport probably needs action photography – but please, prove me wrong!
