PostSubject: Next best thing to Cardiff?   Sat Oct 25, 2014 1:23 am

It's a well known fact that Steve would like to piggy back on the speedway GP at Cardiff (but it would be "in season"). For whatever reason this has never come to fruition. But today a mate I took to the stox earlier this year asked me if I fancied going with him to Birmingham to see the indoor MX. It turns out to be a winter series and a couple of their venues could almost squeeze in a oval (might have to take out the first 10 rows of seats). Could it work (post MX event with some landscaping/fencing ect)? Would folk rather get a winter fix of racing indoors? Anyhow here's a link for anyone interested http://arenacrossuk.com/

Most fans would probably say yes, most drivers would possible say no.
Season is gradually getting longer and longer for drivers and not forgetting the mechanics need a bit of a rest.

Problems are always down to cost of installing temporary arena and 'dirt' wouldn't work for indoor racing [ in this country ]

Plans for Cardiff were 'on tarmac' under neath the pitch. That was a minimum 1/4m project back in 2004

Thanks Steve, it was a purely hypothetical question. But I was thinking more along the lines of smaller 4 wheeled vehicles than F1's eg. Mini's/saloons and maybe bangers. The sound of metal bashing in a enclosed arena comes across very well. This might shed a bit of light on my line of thinking www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9CKy34Ij-s

I had forgotten about Earls Court. It was December 1993 and ran hot rods and superstox according to Simon Lewis' s great site. I don't think they had the congest charge/emmissions zone in place then but if the car parking is anything like todays price of 26.50, I can see why it fell flat on the start line.

I was one of the few in the crowd at Earls Court. And I drove - and yes I think parking was about 15 back then! I nearly cried....!

Don't know where you were hiding Matt but me and Andy Johnston, former V8 Hot Stox driver were also there !!

Man what a place to get to and park !

Cost me more to park than it did to buy my first car and fill it with fuel !!!

Out of interest what formulas raced and roughly how many in each race? How did the racing come across?
Also do any photos exist of the event? Thanks.

'who was your driver of the day?'.....'Racing rating?'

And of course the only question worth asking.....was it better than the Coventry from that month? Laughing

Thanks for the link. Looks like it needed some bangers in there to get the family audience to go along and a few stunts like this lot http://nitrocircuslive.com/nz-tour-2015/ (yes they are on around the same time as the team champs for those lucky enough to be out there).

Long time ago obviously, but a good weekend away as they say !!

Not your typical meeting, delays between racing to clear the fumes, but at the time it to me, a must see, must be there meeting.

Would it appeal to me now, no, not enough cars, not enough contact and after attending several NEC live action arena sessions, more than a bit tame, but hey ho this was the original indoor show so gets plenty of thumbs up!!
